ModCloth pop-up store offers styles for Pittsburghers IRL

There’s even a yinz necklace.

Fit and flare dresses and black jumpers may be popular with ModCloth shoppers everywhere, but one stylist for the retro-inspired company knows exactly the twist for Pittsburgh: Adding a gold sweater and a yinz necklace.

And how would ModCloth know? It was founded in Carnegie Mellon dorms.

After touring the country and spending time in Austin, Texas; Washington D.C.; Denver and Portland, Ore., the company’s IRL tour is in town with a pop-up shop Downtown at 625 Smithfield Ave. It’s open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Monday, except Sunday when it’s open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

We asked a ModCloth stylist to create four outfits for Pittsburghers, since you still have a few days to try on those clothes at the fit shop. Here’s how it went:

Meet the stylist.

This is Lara Kadillak, the retail operation lead — aka she does it all— for ModCloth’s IRL fit shop. She’s based in San Fransisco, and this is her first trip to Pittsburgh. (The company has offices in those two cities and Los Angeles.) She said Pittsburghers have impressed her with their style.

“I’ve seen some very fashionable ladies,” Kadillak said.

So how does she put together looks to wear here? It’s a mix of prints and patterns, Kadillak said, adding that there is a time and place to be more formal, but in general, the outfits are more casual while also being fun and colorful.

The key to this outfit is the denim skirt, Kadillak said. The material has spandex in it, so it’s stretchy and comfortable, but with the buttons and pocket details, it’s also stylish. Plus, the inspirational tee and plaid shirt add something extra to the casual outfit, she said.

ModCloth is known for its popular fit and flare dresses, and this version has been one of the bestsellers during the tour, Kadillak said. Yes, it has trees on it, and there are pockets, too. The blazer makes it work appropriate, she added. But without the jacket, the necklace is more visible, and the dress is ready for meeting up with friends.

It’s all Pittsburgh, but is still feminine and polished. This jumper is another one of the most popular items in the store, and Kadillak said it has a sporty element that is a nod to a uniform. The yinz necklace makes that Pittsburgh uniform even better.

It’s the first day of fall, but winter is coming. Kadillak, who lives in California but is originally from Colorado, said layers will keep you both warm and fashionable.

This look has a wool blazer, scarf and long sleeves to keep you warm, so don’t be afraid of a skirt in winter. The stylist said she’d pair tall boots with brown or, most likely, black wool tights. (And, yes, you can wear black and brown together, she said.)

Ready to shop?

The bad news is that appointments with stylists like Lara are full unless someone cancels. Stylists are available either way to answer all of your fashion questions.

The fit shop has a wide range of clothes to try on, from XS to 4X, but don’t expect to go home with  your purchases. Shoppers can try on clothes in person and order them online (with free shipping). Items like graphic t-shirts, vintage items and accessories can go home with you. And speaking of accessories, if the yinz necklace isn’t your style, check out this:
