Red wine, whiskey and vodka: What Allegheny County drinks

There are more than 70 state-sanctioned liquor and wine shops in Allegheny County — including some of the most popular in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board this week released a review of sales between June 2015 and June 2016. Among the findings? Despite the state’s antiquated liquor laws, alcohol continues to be very popular in this part of the commonwealth.

Even with wholesalers in the mix, the Fine Wine & Good Spirits at 5956 Centre Ave. was the fourth best-performing store in the state, with nearly $21.2 million dollars in sales in just one year. But that’s just a drop in the bucket.

What Allegheny County is drinking

People spent a lot of money in Allegheny County on wine and liquor: $291,618,313 during the year-long period. That’s more than any other county, including Philadelphia.

Red wine, whiskey, vodka and white wine were the most popular items.

The liquor board also listed the tops brands by region. The state is split into three sections, and Allegheny County falls into Region 3 with more than 20 other counties including Bedford, Erie and Potter.

The liquor board also highlighted alcohol sales in Allegheny County on June 12, 2016: the day the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. Sales that day, according to the board, were up more than 17 percent in the county compared to the same day in 2015.

The top items sold June 12 were Tito’s Handmade Vodka (1.75 L), Hennessy Cognac (750 mL), Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum (1.75 L), Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey (1.75 L and 750 mL).

In a ranking of popular spirits from state craft distilleries (ones that are licensed to produce up to 100,000 gallons a year), two Wigle products cracked the top 10: Wigle Small Cask Series Rye Whiskey (No. 5) and Wigle Organic Wheat Whiskey (No. 10).

Wigle’s rye was only bested in sales by Bluecoat Gin, Boyd & Blair Vodka, Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey and Penn 1681 Vodka.
