Steel City Roller Derby has found a new home rink.

Starting today, the league will use Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Arena, in Cheswick, for practices and games, SCRD announced in a press release this afternoon.

The league was in search of a new location since late October, after the owners of Romp n Roll in Shaler announced it was closing. The rink had been the league’s home for 10 years.

Jamie Fargo, a founding member of Steel City Roller Derby who skates with the name Ally McKill, said in the press release that arena staff has been enthusiastic from the start of conversations with Steel City Roller Derby.

“We’ve been impressed with their willingness to accommodate the needs of our league, everything from practice and game timing to setting up the space just the way we like it,” Fargo said.

During the search, league members looked for a place that would fit the needs of practices, games — and fans.

The arena and event space opened in 1999 with indoor turf fields, but is having a grand opening on Saturday for its new indoor basketball courts, said Lance Welliver, general manager for the arena. Steel City will have a demo at 10:30 a.m. during the event.

Adding roller derby was good timing, Welliver said. Basketball, pickleball, volleyball and roller derby will use the wooden-floored courts in the new space.

“We’re excited to be [the roller derby’s] home for the long term,” he said.

Steel City starts intra-league play at the arena with doubleheader games Jan. 22 and Feb. 19, followed by a March 25 championship game. Also on March 25, travel team the Steel Hurtin’ will have their home opener against Ann Arbor. Find more game details and tickets here.
