The top Valentine’s Day spots in Pittsburgh, according to Uber

The ride-sharing company is reminding you where you went (or should have gone) last year.

Whether you love it or love to hate it, Valentine’s Day is less than a week away.

And if you are still thinking about dinner plans, Uber has got you covered. Similar to the Pittsburgh restaurant guide that the ride-sharing company released in November, Uber created a list of the top 10 spots for Valentine’s Day. (Although no one says you can’t go any time you want.)

The list uses data from Uber drop-offs in Pittsburgh on Valentine’s Day 2016. So if you’re surprised, remember that it doesn’t matter where the Uber picked you up at the end of the night. And if you didn’t take an Uber to get there, your super romantic pick didn’t count. (Sorry.)

Here’s the top 10:

  3. James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy (422 Foreland St., Deutschtown)
  4. Monterey Bay Fish Grotto (1411 Grandview Ave., Duquesne Heights)
  5. Eddie Merlot’s (444 Liberty Ave, Downtown)
  6. Altius (1230 Grandview Ave., Duquesne Heights)
  7. Grand Concourse (100 W Station Square Dr., South Shore)
  8. The Capital Grille (301 Fifth Ave., Downtown)
  9. Lidia’s Italy (1400 Smallman St., Strip District)
  10. Pizzaiolo Primo (8 Market Square, Downtown)

Uber created this list for 15 cities — the 12 cities including Pittsburgh that have restaurant guides — plus Philadelphia, Seattle and San Diego.  See the top spot in each of the cities here.

Data sharing from Uber

This guide is the latest in Uber releasing city-specific data. In addition to the November restaurant guide, Uber released in January the top destinations for Uber rides that start at University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University.

The Valentine’s Day list uses data from seven months before the self-driving car pilot launched in September 2016, so it doesn’t include data about self-driving car rides, but the other two sets of lists do.

Uber confirmed that if the list has data from mid-September 2016 and forward, it would include rides in self-driving cars. But that data is only about self-driving car rides requested through the Uber app. (So it doesn’t include data from Uber employees testing the cars.)

In January, the ride-sharing company also announced Uber Movement, a website filled with anonymous GPS data from Uber trips everywhere the company operates. The data about Pittsburgh also includes rides requested through the Uber app during the self-driving car pilot, Uber confirmed to The Incline. The website is expected to be publicly accessible this month.

Yet Uber has been tight-lipped about data that is solely about self-driving vehicles. For example, releasing information about fender-benders involving the self-driving vehicles is something Uber has said it’s working on internally.

In December, Shari Shapiro, Uber’s head of public affairs for Pennsylvania and Delaware said in the report from the state Autonomous Vehicles Testing Policy Task Force that she disagreed with the recommendation for the state to collect the total number of miles and hours that testers drove self-driving cars. She wrote that it wasn’t relevant and “could reveal commercially sensitive information.”

Following the #DeleteUber campaign sparked less than two weeks ago, City Controller Michael Lamb and public transportation advocates in Pittsburgh also called for more public data from Uber, especially about self-driving cars. In an interview with The Incline, Mayor Bill Peduto said he’s hopeful that Pittsburgh will get more Uber data in 2017, including self-driving car sensor information. He said he plans for that data to go to the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center so it’s public to everyone, not just the city.
