Three cats have gone from providing cuddles at Colony Cafe to lounging on living room couches.

Within two days of the cafe opening opening, Animal Friends received adoption applications for Merlot, Latte and Zinfandel, cafe co-owner Sue Hendrickson said. On Sunday, they went to their new homes.

The adoptions were all part of Colony Cafe’s plan.

Hendrickson said the nearly instant adoptions were unexpected — in the way that it’s unexpected when plans work like they are supposed. But she said she wasn’t surprised.

“They were all so freakin adorable. I’m surprised they didn’t all go home on the first day,” Hendrickson said. She added that the adoption process is the same as it is at Animal Friends. “It’s just here instead of there.”

The cafe, which opened Thursday, serves coffee, daily lunch specials, soup and sandwich melts — and wine on the first floor. Upstairs (and away from the food) is a glass-enclosed cat loft, where for $8 per hour you can visit the cats with up to nine other people.

(If Merlot, Latte and Zinfandel seem familiar, that’s because you’ve seen photos of them from the cafe’s opening.)

Don’t worry. Hendrickson said the cafe already has new cats for you to visit, but you’ll need to plan ahead.

Cat loft visits have filled fast (and are booked through Feb. 25). Hendrickson said she’s received emails from “people begging and pleading” for a time slot. Reservations aren’t required but are recommended because a limited number of people can visit the cats at once, she said.
