Mapping self-driving cars

Help us map where autonomous cars are driving in and around Pittsburgh

Since the companies won’t tell us, we need your help.

Seeing a self-driving Uber is nothing new for people in certain Pittsburgh neighborhoods, with autonomous Volvo SUVs regularly circling areas such as Downtown, the Strip District and Shadyside.

But there are other parts of the city where a sighting is more rare.

Uber, which is rolling out a new fleet soon, doesn’t reveal which neighborhoods it’s driving in, but does say where it is picking up and dropping off riders in self-driving cars: Bloomfield, Downtown, Garfield, Lawrenceville, North Shore, Point Breeze, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill and Strip District.

Argo AI cars have recently been spotted in town, too. But Alan Hall, a Ford spokesman fielding questions for the Pittsburgh startup, said the cars on the streets are not in autonomous mode yet, and the company is “not planning to provide specifics about the test areas or routes.”

Meanwhile, Delphi cars don’t have the sensors on top that make other self-driving cars so noticeable, and they aren’t sharing locations either.

These aren’t the only companies here either — there’s also Carnegie Mellon University and Aurora Innovation, maybe even others, doing testing in Pittsburgh, too.

And no one will tell us where all this testing is happening, so this is where you come in.

How to help

Here at The Incline, we want Pittsburghers to know where these autonomous vehicles are being tested — so we’re going to map it. And we need you to keep your eyes out for us.

See a self-driving Uber in a neighborhood where you haven’t noticed one before? Or a self-driving car that’s *not* an Uber? Snap a picture, and tell us the location.

To send us the photo and vehicle’s location:

Gotta catch ’em all

To get started, we mapped what we know. Check out the interactive version here. We’ll provide regular map updates based on what Pittsburgh is seeing.
