When it came to picking books in 2017, Pittsburghers stuck with popular titles and books adapted for TV and movies. Think: Hillbilly Elegy and The Handmaid’s Tale.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh pulled for The Incline lists of the year’s most checked-out adult fiction and top adult nonfiction books — all formats — and the top ebooks in the two categories. (If a book was on the overall list and ebook list, there’s an asterisk after the author’s name.)

The lists are of the top 25 titles because “there are some interesting titles that fall outside of the top 10,” Suzanne Thinnes, communications manager for the library, wrote in an email.

One example is The Other Einstein by local author Marie Benedict, a.k.a. No. 12 on the fiction ebooks list. Thinnes said that’s in part because it was picked for Big Library Read, a “global ebook reading club.” Benedict’s new book, Carnegie’s Maidwill publish in January, she added. Right behind The Other Einstein was The Handmaid’s Tale at No. 13, which premiered as a Hulu series in April.

Also on the lists and on the screen were Hidden Figures, The Girl on the Train and Me Before You. There were some repeats from the 2016 lists, like All the Light We Cannot See, Between the World and Me and The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.
