Update, 10 a.m. Feb 26: Voting for this round has closed.

It’s a rematch. For the second year in a row, Swissvale VFD and North Braddock VFD each advanced out of the first round to face each other in the Sweet Sixteen of the Ultimate Pittsburgh Fish Fry.

Swissvale enters the matchup as the highest vote-getter in round one. North Braddock competed in one of the closest races of round one and emerged victorious. When it comes to this year’s Sweet Sixteen showdown — Will Swissvale win again? Or will North Braddock even the score?

More than 3,800 voters told us which fish fry contenders should advance out of the first round of this year’s Ultimate Pittsburgh Fish Fry bracket. The fire halls and social clubs quadrant dominated over the eateries and two church categories with nearly 4,500 votes in its four races. The match-up with the most votes was also in that section — Swissvale VFD (54 percent) vs. Monroeville FD Company #3 (46 percent).

Not only will this round determine which contenders make it to the Elite Eight, but it will decide the top fire hall and the top social club before they face off against each other.

The races are already tight — of the 16 matchups in round one, only three fish fry contenders are advancing with more than 60 percent of the vote.

  • Wholey’s Kitchen (Strip District) received 73 percent of the vote over Penn Hills Bar & Grill.
  • Ancient Order of Hibernians Division #32 (Carnegie) netted 65 percent of the vote over Elliot West-End Athletic Association.
  • Saints Simon and Jude (Scott) scored 63.5 percent of the vote over St. Monica (Beaver Falls).

The rest of the races were a 50-something percent to 40-something percent vote split, with the closest race between St. Maurice (Forest Hills) and Sacred Heart (Shadyside) as well as North Braddock VFD vs. Connellsville Twp VFD. St. Maurice and North Braddock VFD both advanced with 52 percent of the vote.
