Pittsburgh’s Point State Park fountain is finally back on for summer

Better late than never

Consider it a message to Mother Nature: There’s no turning back.

After some intermittent testing this weekend, the Point State Park fountain is back on for good as of this morning, confirmed Terry Brady, spokesperson with the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

If it feels late in the year for the fountain’s return, well, it is. Typically the fountain is on by mid-April, Brady said.

Pittsburgh’s on-again, off-again relationship with winter stalled work on the fountain, he told The Incline. Flooding earlier this month caused the Point to be under water multiple times and delayed work to “remove the mud from the inner ring, outer ring, piping and fountain reservoir,” as well as to clean the plaza of debris, he said.

The state’s goal was to turn on the fountain around the end of April — a mark they just met. It comes just in time for warm weather, too, with forecasts from the National Weather Service predicting highs in the 80s for Wednesday and Thursday.

The fountain typically stays on until mid-November, around Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11), so you have plenty of summer days at the fountain ahead of you. But if you want to see it now, check out this video from KDKA:
