This Friday is the second (and last) Friday the 13th of the year, but you can keep the celebration going forever with a commemorative tattoo.
Several local tattoo shops are offering deals like $13 tattoos or $31 piercings to commemorate the holiday.
Before you commit to some new ink, here’s some background on the superstitious celebration: Though Fridays and the number 13 have earned a bad rap for centuries, there’s no written evidence of Friday the 13th being considered unlucky until 1869, according to EarthSky, a website about science and the sky. If you’re scared of Friday the 13th, by the way, that’s called friggatriskaidekaphobia.
On the other hand, if you want to embrace the holiday by getting a tattoo, we want to see! Tweet us a picture here, or tag us on Instagram, #theinclinepgh, and we might just share your new ink with the world.
Pittsburgh Tattoo Company, Downtown
The deal at this Downtown shop is so good it attracts long lines every Friday the 13th. You can score a tattoo for $13 (plus a $7 tip) — everything from spaceships to spiders to bugs to flowers.
Lines usually begin around 10:30 a.m. in advance of the shop’s noon opening. Last Friday the 13th, Pittsburgh Tattoo Company tattooed 500 people and pierced 100.
“Everyone was in a good mood, and people say they make friends in line,” said part-owner Diane McQuade. “People typically think of Friday the 13th as a bad luck day. The tattoo industry likes to embrace the esoteric stuff. We just offer lucky tattoos, I guess. Something to change the perspective of a bad day.”
The shop will offer only black tattoos — no color — and they can only be placed on arms or legs. They’ll cut off the line around 6 p.m.
Ice 9 Studio, South Side
This South Side tattoo shop will offer a flash sheet featuring small designs from Ice 9’s artists. Expect skulls, animals and plenty of designs with a prominent 13.
Each black tattoo runs $31 plus a $9 tip, with no face or neck tattoos available.
“Friday the 13th is supposed to be a taboo sort of day and tattooing is looked at as a taboo sort of thing, so they go together,” said Ice 9 receptionist Alyssa Allison.
The promotion runs from 1 to 11 p.m. Friday.
Alter Ego Body Art Studio, Castle Shannon
At Alter Ego, look for a set of flash designs priced at either $31 or $66. Piercings will be on sale at $31. Tattoo designs released so far include a cat in a witch hat, a creepy Mickey Mouse and a lantern.
In the Blood Tattoo, South Side
Godspeed Tattoo and Body Piercing and 10th Street Tattoo, South Side
At these South Side sister shops, Friday the 13th is basically a holiday. Expect a variety of designs only available on Friday the 13th — different at each shop. Smaller tattoos are priced at $13, and larger designs cost $31 (both with a minimum $13 tip).
Artists will offer tattoos on a first-come, first-served basis, and they’ll stay open till 2 a.m. or even later.
