This month was all about the openings. No restaurant closings were reported (except for the temporary closure of Tazza D’Oro in Millvale).

Hello

Penn Brewery, Downtown

Dubbed “Pittsburgh’s newest oldest brewery,” Penn Brewery’s Downtown taproom is now open. Look for year-round classics like the Penn Pilsner alongside seasonal specialties like the St. Nikolaus Bock. The cozy Downtown spot is perfect for happy hour.

Dish Osteria, South Side

Tastebuds rejoice. Dish Osteria has re-opened after a two-year hiatus. “The service, the atmosphere, the bar, the music … all the things people loved over the years will be back. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel from scratch,” the restaurateur told Pittsburgh Magazine.

Garbarino’s, East Liberty

A fourth-generation Italian restaurant, Garbarino’s took over the former La Riviera Bistro. Garbarino’s is designed as a wine bar and neighborhood trattoria with family recipes, house-made pasta, and locally sourced ingredients.

Leo., Manchester

With the guiding principles of “Community, Service, Humanity,” Leo. A Public House is now open on the North Side. Find sandwiches, salads, and late-night snacks on the food menu. As for drinks, look for wine, beer, and cocktails (like the Manchester Manhattan and the Violet Tini).

Pabellon, Banksville

Offering a mix of Venezuelan and Mexican cuisine, Pabellon serves arepas, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and just about anything else you can imagine.

Bridges & Bourbon, Downtown

After a year spent gutting the former Seviche space, Bridges & Bourbon is set to launch soon, the venue promised in a Facebook post. Bridges & Bourbon describes itself as a “high-end restaurant focusing on modernist cocktails, small plates, and desserts, with weekend brunch.”

Cinderlands, Strip District

Three years in the making, Cinderlands Warehouse is now set to open in the former Spaghetti Warehouse building. The brewery and restaurant will be Cinderlands’ second location, joining its first site in Lawrenceville. After more than a year of construction, the Smallman Street location will host a soft opening on Tuesday, May 7, with a grand opening weekend beginning Friday, May 10.

Gi-Jin, Downtown

The subject of years of anticipation, restaurateurs Richard DeShantz and Tolga Sevdik are expected to open Gi-Jin soon — possibly even this month. Look for sushi, gin, Japanese whiskey, and a giant dragon mural.

Pizzeria Davide, Strip District

The team behind the mega-popular DiAnoia’s Eatery is opening a takeout pizza window. Pizzeria Davide will specialize in old world style pizzas (provolone cheese on the bottom and sauce on top), along with appetizers, sandwiches, and desserts. Find it in the back of DiAnoia’s starting May 3.

Thunderbird Cafe & Music Hall, Lawrenceville

Thunderbird, a historic spot for music and drinks, has been delayed in opening again citing a utility service issue. Shows scheduled for this month have been moved to other venues, and an opening is expected in late May.

Which Came First, Allegheny Center

There are lots of options at the newest Federal Galley spot, Which Came First, set to open May 2. Choose white or dark meat chicken, then pick fried or grilled, and finally decide how you want it served (on a bun, in a wrap, or on a salad), Pittsburgh Magazine reports.

🍦 A Lawrenceville location for Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream is expected to set up shop this spring.

🏈 North Shore Seven, a restaurant near Heinz Field from Ben Roethlisberger, is planned to open this spring, boasting made-from-scratch entrees and “Hollywood-style booth seating,” which is maybe just a little excessive.

🍞 A permanent location for Pigeon Bagels is expected to open this spring.

🥘 Con Alma is coming to Shadyside this spring with Latin-inspired cuisine, plus live jazz and cocktails.

🥘 Guapo, a New Mexican spot in Federal Galley, is opening June 4.

🇫🇷 A new outpost for Gaby et Jules Patisseries et Macaron bakery is scheduled for East Liberty this summer.

🍣 A yet-to-be-named 14-seat sushi counter tucked on the second floor between Round Corner Cantini and Umami in Lawrenceville is set to open this summer.

🍔 Supper, formerly of Federal Galley, is moving this summer to the space occupied by Crystal on Penn in the Strip District.

🍺 The Woods House, a Scottish pub, is slated for one of Pittsburgh’s oldest houses. Crews are working toward summer pop-ups and a fall opening.

🍺 Platform Beer Co., the Cleveland-based brewery, will open a brewery and tasting room this year in Garfield.

🍴 Brick Shop and Over Eden restaurants at TRYP Hotel will feature two prominent Pittsburgh chefs when they open, date TBA.

🥓 Larder at Larimer, a new restaurant from Justin Severino, is expected to open inside East End Brewing Taproom sometime this spring with everything from pub food to falafel with tahini.

🌯 A Mexican-Italian fusion is coming to the Strip District in partnership with Edgar Alvarez of Edgar’s Best Tacos.

🔥 Fig & Ash, a “farm-to-flame restaurant,” is headed to Deutschtown.

🍻 Rogan Brewing Co., a taproom with pints and growlers, is coming to West Homestead.

🌮 SYN Taqueria & Pizzeria will open in the former Sharp Edge Friendship location.

🍗 The Eagle, a casual fried chicken restaurant, is coming to Penn Avenue Downtown this fall.

🍕 Iron Born Pizza is moving out of Smallman Galley and into the former Carhops location just down the street sometime this year.

🎳 Shorty’s Pins x Pints, a new entertainment concept with duckpin bowling, bocce, pinball, cornhole, and giant beer pong, plus street food, is coming to the North Shore by year’s end.

🚀 Grist House Craft Brewery is turning a Collier Township Cold War-era Nike Missile Command Center into another outpost for the popular brewery. But a lot of work is ahead, so be patient. An opening date is expected a year or two from now.

🎮 Look for a location of the Punch Bowl Social chain with food and drinks, plus ping pong, darts, bowling, classic video games, and karaoke in the Lower Hill in 2020.

🎶 A Rascal Flatts restaurant is coming to Station Square. … Maybe. The operator has been served with an eviction notice, and there’s plenty of legal drama, the Business Times explains.
