Wind down with a wine tasting

Discover ‘American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition’

In this new History Center exhibit, travel back in time to the era of flappers, suffragists, bootleggers and temperance workers. See a Prohibition-era “rum runner” motorboat, a re-created speakeasy and original ratification copies of the 18th and 21st Amendments. The exhibition will explore Pittsburgh's connections to Prohibition through historic artifacts. Fun fact: The term "speakeasy" was coined just outside of Pittsburgh in McKeesport. The exhibit opens Feb. 10.

Learn how to prepare the Feast of the Seven Fishes

Hear from Sam Wholey and WQED-TV personality Chris Fennimore about the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes, ahead of Christmas Eve. Try some samples and learn how to create the feast yourself. What is the Feast of the Seven Fishes? We learned about its history and its popularity in Pittsburgh with expertise from Heinz History Center.

Holidays in the ‘Burgh

Hang out with reindeer at Wholey’s

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. Well, if you don't, this is your chance to meet Dasher and Dancer, at least. Straight from the North Pole, this dynamic deer duo will hang out at Wholey's Market in the Strip District. Kids (and adults, we assume) can feed the reindeer with a small donation to the Homeless Children's Education Fund.

Recognize Veterans Day with a flag ceremony

In honor of Veterans Day, Heinz History Center will host a flag ceremony. Local veterans will join museum visitors to unfurl a giant 36-foot American flag, sing the National Anthem, participate in a moment of silence and then help to ceremoniously fold the flag.

Calling all foodies: Heinz History Center is hosting a day just for you. At Hometown Homegrown, sample foods from local vendors, learn something new at a cooking demo and enjoy live music.

Discuss feminism, sip wine, hang out with cats

It's one part college seminar, one part hanging out with friends (and cats). Colony Cafe's "Living Room Learning" will bring Avigail S. Oren, a historian, writer and teacher, to discuss the topic "Lena Dunham: Feminist Friend or Foe?" During the discussion, you can pet cats, sip wine and snack on cheese and veggies.

A festa Italiana at the History Center

Heinz History Center is hosting a celebration of all things Italian, featuring bocce, crafts, live cooking demos, music and food. Guests can explore their family tree, practice Italian vocabulary and learn the Italian card game scopa. Prepare for the event by reading up on Pittsburgh's pizza history with expertise from the history center's director of the Italian American Program.
