What Pittsburgh is talking about

Since it’s summer, Pittsburghers are already thinking about fireworks. Obviously.

Here’s The Big List of where to watch fireworks, thanks to Pittsburgh Magazine. Of course, there’s the annual Flashes of Freedom fireworks show, but there are also fireworks shows all around town.

What does Pittsburgh’s love of fireworks mean for our air quality? Sorry to be a downer, but our research found it isn’t good.

In other summery news that’s less of a bummer, it’s county fair season. Look for local goods, good ol’ family fun, and all the fried things. Here’s where to find a fair near you.

In other news…

A growing immigrant population is prompting changes in Pittsburgh’s public schools. And while the Pittsburgh Public Schools district has added new translation services and quicker transitions to regular classrooms, it remains a work in progress. (PublicSource)

What is Pittsburgh’s food identity, and how is it changing? Perhaps best known for pierogies and french fry-topped concoctions, Pittsburgh is increasingly known for more exotic fare. And an upcoming panel discussion at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center will examine the state of Pittsburgh’s food identity with some of the region’s best food and beverage ambassadors. Pennsylvania’s toilet history is rich. Of course there’s Pittsburgh’s namesake potty, but there’s also Ben Franklin’s historical privies, pay toilets along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and the finest public restroom in America. (PennLive)

You said it

Ah, summer in Pittsburgh. The sun’s out, school’s out, and the humidity wraps around the city like a tightly knotted Terrible Towel. But how can you be sure when the season’s officially here?

Our Facebook friends helped us come up with a list of surefire ways to know when we’re in the heat of things.

But that’s just a glimpse into your summer intel. Here are some other indicators of its arrival:

“The Pirates are 0-for-June.” — Ed Cidade

“But for real: When Heinz Hall opens its courtyard.” — Miriam Rebecca

“Grandma kept the Lemon Blend mixed in the fridge.” — Maryann Grillo

“When the rain stops long enough to get a mosquito bite.” — Monica Jo Tomaszewski

“It’s only 80 but feels like you’re in a sauna.” — Jean Z. Ross

“People are sitting on their parking chairs.” — Rob Mitchell

“Kennywood’s OPEN.” — Terry Jill Bonar

“You plug in the dehumidifier!” — Maryann Grillo

At least we’re in it together. Join the heat of the conversation on Facebook and Instagram.

Let’s get together

🍎 June 26: Celebrate The Incline’s Who’s Next: Education class, 19 up-and-comers preparing Pittsburgh for the future, at a happy hour in their honor (Downtown)

One more thing…

Shout-out to Pittsburgh native Billy Porter, who is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Pride.com reports. The Tony award winner and fashion icon hasn’t scheduled a star ceremony yet, but we know Porter’s entrance is going to be fabulous.

Enjoy your Monday, all.
