What Pittsburgh is talking about

Pittsburgh will celebrate the Fourth of July with a flag-raising, colonial reenactments, an Air Force flyover, live music, and, of course, fireworks.

The festivities are expected to draw thousands Downtown. Here’s what you need to know:

  • When are the fireworks? 9:35 p.m.
  • Where should I watch them? Point State Park and Mount Washington are the classics, but here are some suggestions from Discover the Burgh, including Fineview and the West End. A few other ideas: Find a rooftop bar Downtown (get there early), watch from the Strip District, head to Schenley Park, and more.
  • If you’d rather stay in, watch the fireworks livestream here, via WPXI.
  • If you don’t want to trek Downtown, Pittsburgh Magazine rounded up a bunch of other local fireworks displays to check out.
  • Looking for something to do during the day? Here’s a full schedule, via the Trib.
  • Look up for the Independence Day flyover featuring a C-17 from the 911th Air Reserve Station at Pittsburgh International Airport piloted by Mount Lebanon native and U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Tom Huzzard, per WTAE.
  • Be safe. Whether you’re celebrating at the Point or anywhere else, follow the rules, as explained here by KDKA-TV.
  • If you’re celebrating on a boat, heed this very important and very cute PSA from Zane the police dog.

In other news…

Meet Cappy, Dodger and Zane, the newest Pittsburgh police dogs. Cappy, a bloodhound, uses his tracking skills to locate lost and at-risk people, including children and dementia patients. Dodger, a black lab, is the city’s first accelerant detection canine and will work with the fire investigation unit. And Zane, a golden retriever, is the city’s first comfort dog who will help first responders and victims of violent crimes. (WTAE)

One of the world’s best gay bars is right here in Pittsburgh. This new list features Blue Moon Bar in Lawrenceville, saying, “They are always hosting events throughout the week, such as open stage nights, drag shows, and karaoke! Every time I’m there I feel like I’m part of a big family where everyone is just super gay.” P.S. Don’t miss open stage nights hosted by Incline Who’s Next honoree Bambi. (BuzzFeed)

Pittsburgh alligators are making a splash in the news right now, but Yinzigators are nothing new. In fact, gator sightings around town date back to the 1800s. There was a gator duo at Highland Park, a gator owned by a rich lady called “Darling,” and even a gator who roamed the sewers. Chomp into this Pittsburgh alligator history.
