What Pittsburgh is talking about

Can you imagine trading our “yinz” for “y’all?”

It could’ve happened, as Pittsburgh, Pa. was almost Pittsburgh, Va. A new exhibit at the Fort Pitt Museum called “Pittsburgh, Virginia” explores this turbulent time in our city’s history.

From the 17th century through the American Revolution, Pennsylvania and Virginia had overlapping claims to much of present-day Western Pa., the Fort Pitt Museum explains.

The exhibit includes rare artifacts, like a carved powder horn, likely made within days of the British capturing Fort Duquesne. The powder horn (used by soldiers to carry gunpowder) is believed to be one of the earliest objects made in Pittsburgh.

Before you check out the exhibit, brush up on your local history with our round-up of “50 fascinating facts about Fort Pitt.” It’s full of surprises.

In other news …

“Remember, repair, together” will be the theme of the events to mark one year since the mass shooting at Tree of Life–Or L’Simcha synagogue. Events on Oct. 27 include community service opportunities, a Torah study, and community commemoration ceremony. (KDKA-TV)

“There are black people in the future.” Alisha Wormsley’s message may have been removed from an East Liberty billboard, but that only spurred the artist to get louder. She formed an artwork-in-residence program giving microgrants to creators in East Liberty, Bloomfield, Garfield, Larimer, and Homewood. Their work, covering gentrification and displacement, will debut Oct. 24 at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Homewood branch. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Apparently we’re not partying hard in PPG Paints Arena anymore. The Penguins changed their goal song from the Andrew W.K. banger “Party Hard” to the classic “Jump Around” by House of Pain. Pens fans are predictably salty. (TribLive)

💛 Become a part of The Incline’s mission

At The Incline, we bring Pittsburgh together with community-focused storytelling and events. We elevate stories of local people and businesses.

Help us find the helpers.

Who’s Next in Pittsburgh’s First Responders?

When you need help, who’s there? For our upcoming Who’s Next class, we want to honor those people, the first responders who help our community.

Who exactly is a first responder? Think: The medical professionals on the front lines of the opioid epidemic, the police building community relations, researchers developing new lifesaving equipment, ambulance drivers, and so much more.

Help us honor the helpers by nominating a deserving under-40 Pittsburgher here by 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14.
