What Pittsburgh is talking about

Hear from Njaimeh Njie in her own words.

The artist’s first piece of public art, “Homecoming: Hill District, USA,” celebrates black life in the neighborhood.

“It’s a restoring and reinserting of black people into the narrative of this city and this region where we have been erased or at least not fully acknowledged,” Njie tells CityLab.

The artworks look like painted murals, but they’re actually digital images made from photographs. These new works have been printed and pieced together into billboard-sized collages and mounted onto buildings in several locations throughout the neighborhood.

The pieces intentionally feature “everyday people,” not necessarily the big names you’d know.

“My work focuses on everyday black life. I think it’s important to celebrate what’s perceived as the mundane, if you will, because most of us are living somewhere between that struggle and excellence. So I try to lift that up. And I hope that whether you know these people or not, you can see something of yourself in them. And that was kind of the goal,” Njie, an Incline Who’s Next honoree, explained to CityLab.

Here’s a detailed map to plan your visit.

Slow down, Grandview Avenue drivers. Speed humps are coming to the Mount Washington street for a two-month trial run. A city study found that 60 percent of drivers speed on Grandview Avenue, a street that’s popular with tourists and locals alike for its skyline views. (WPXI)

The annual TasteBuds event pairs local chefs with a Buddy sous chef, and Buddies got a first-hand look at a local farm this weekend. On a tour of Rivendale Farms, 14 Buddies learned about the importance of healthy eating, local food, and the environment. TasteBuds is coming up on Nov. 18, and it benefits Best Buddies’ programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. (TribLive)

This local restaurant’s Halloween decorations are over the top — literally. A giant inflatable Stay Puft Marshmallow Man perches atop Angelo’s II in Monongahela, and green tentacles pop out of the windows. Think this decor is a lot? Just wait ’til Christmas. (Today / WTAE)

Today’s how-to

Isn’t it cool how Pittsburgh is beautiful, eclectic, and home all at the same time? We think so, too, which is why we want to see the 412 through your eyes — or, rather, your lens.

Not sure what to take a picture of? We’ve got a few ideas:

  1. Something that only locals know about
  2. Your favorite happy hour
  3. Your pet in one of Pittsburgh’s best parks or breweries
  4. A selfie in front of Dippy or PNC Park or the skyline or anywhere in between

Of course, you can always look to our #theinclinepgh hashtag for inspiration. Now go out there and be the amateur photographer Pittsburgh never knew it needed!

Can you lend a hand?

Yep, you heard right! We are partying it up to celebrate What’s Next on Oct. 23 at Nova Place.

But we need your help to make this party possible. We’re looking for volunteers to lend a hand at the event. In return, you’ll get free admission to the party, a free month of membership, and our eternal admiration. 💛

Fill out this link and let us know if you’re up to the task.
