Attention, Downtown commuters: President Donald Trump is coming to town today to speak at a shale drilling conference, and it could really mess up your commute.
Streets will be closed, bus routes will be affected, 12 city schools are closing, and Downtown businesses have been asked to dismiss employees early or allow them to work remotely, TribLive reported.
And it’s going to cost us. Trump’s visits in 2016 cost $164,000 in police overtime. Police include these kinds of costs in their budget, and they expect more as political candidates visit Pittsburgh before the 2020 election. The city has tried to bill the Trump campaign in the past but hasn’t received payment.
You can go to the conference, if you’re into that kind of thing. Anybody can register for a free general admission pass on a first-come, first-served basis, WPXI reports.
Protests are expected. Police said they’re “very tolerant of protests” but will not tolerate “violent protesting and damage,” per 90.5 WESA.
Here’s a map of the road closures.

Well, this is a scream. But not the kind ScareHouse expected. The nationally acclaimed haunted house will not open its Strip District location in time for Halloween. “The Scream District” attractions are complete, but “unforeseen issues” have delayed the opening again. ScareHouse hopes to open at some point this year, saying “Halloween is never really over.” (TribLive)
Take the time to visit Lest We Forget, a new outdoor art installation in Oakland on display through Nov. 15. Located near the Cathedral of Learning, the traveling exhibit features dozens of portraits of Holocaust survivors, including Pittsbugh-area survivors. The artist wants to “confront passers-by as a reminder of history, and to raise awareness of the hatred and bigotry present in society today.” Its visit to Pittsburgh also commemorates one year since the mass shooting at Tree of Life synagogue. If you’ve ever spotted the random words around the Mexican War Streets and wondered what was up, we’ve got the answer. A writer chose the 100 words based on what held meaning for Pittsburgh and his experience here โ words like talent, thought, baseball, temperance, equation, horizon, ginger, nostalgia, fear, and God. Officially called River of Words, this public art project has weathered the years, and The Atlantic calls it “a Big Little Idea that any town could try and that has delivered a big payoff.” (The Atlantic)
