🤔 5 big questions for Pittsburgh in 2020

Crystal ballin'

We’re starting the new year with a look into our crystal ball — sort of.

2019 is done, but many of its biggest stories aren’t.

That got us wondering: What 2019 local questions could become answers in 2020?

Come with us for a glimpse of Pittsburgh’s future …

  • What’s up with the Downtown sinkhole? The sinkhole that gave us a beloved — and tattoo-worthy — bus is still being patched. And while officials first said it would take “weeks” to fix, they quickly changed that to “several months.” Either way, it’s a surefire sign of how badly Pittsburgh needs to fix our aging infrastructure. As for that bus, it kept on truckin.’ (Post-Gazette)
  • What’s next for the Tree of Life synagogue? It became the site of the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in U.S. history in 2018. Now, synagogue officials plan to reopen as a “center for Jewish life in the United States.” And while it’s unclear when exactly that will happen, a fundraising campaign is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2020. The trial of accused Tree of Life gunman Robert Bowers could also get underway this year. (WPXI)
  • Who turns out for Trump? Voters in southwestern Pennsylvania helped put Donald Trump in the White House nearly four years ago. But will it happen again — or will turnout in Pittsburgh and our suburbs swing the swing state back to blue? (Governing)
  • Will the BRT become a reality in 2020? Pittsburgh’s got the plans for a Bus Rapid Transit system between Oakland and Downtown, and 2020 could be the year when the project really takes off. Especially if it’s awarded a huge federal grant in the first months of 2020, as transit officials predict. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
  • Is this (finally) the Pirates’ year? The team is coming off a rough season and an even rougher offseason full of intense criticism from fans. But will personnel changes in the front office and dugout breathe new life into the struggling Buccos? We’ll find out in April 😬. (WTAE)
