What Pittsburgh is talking about

There’s new leadership at Delta Foundation, a prominent local LGBTQ group. Jim Sheppard is interim board president, and Marty Healey is chair of Pittsburgh Pride 2020 following the resignation of president Gary Van Horn. Van Horn was charged in December with impersonating law enforcement. After a leave of absence, he resigned yesterday. The board also launched a review of its finances. Case closed. The former librarian and bookseller involved in the theft of rare books from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh have pleaded guilty to some charges. Police say the librarian stole prints, maps, and rare books for years, then handed them off to the bookseller who resold them. Several hundred rare items worth more than $8 million were taken. On the list of America’s favorite restaurants? Sheetz. Sheriously. Convenience chains have increased sales inside their stores by around 30 percent over the past decade. Why? People are starved for time. Sheetz, for one, is targeting Millennials who “tend to be much more accepting of eating at a gas station.” In case you were wondering, Sheetz topped $7 billion in sales last year. (CNN)

Our sinkhole memelord is sticking around for awhile. Repairs on the massive Downtown sinkhole have stopped for now. Crews discovered that an underground tunnel at the very bottom of the sinkhole was damaged. That tunnel provides steam to heat Downtown businesses, and fixing it is going to be tricky. (WPXI)

Mister Rogers โ€” er, Tom Hanks โ€” scored an Oscar nod. Hanks was nominated for best actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Fred Rogers in “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” It’s the 25th time Hanks has been nominated for this particular role โ€” others include the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. ๐Ÿก Why Mary invests in The Incline

“The Incline makes Pittsburgh a better place and it makes me a better Pittsburgher. You’ve got to invest in that. The neighborly feelings, the connection, and the information it shares with me are worth well over $8/month.” โ€”ย Mary Weidner

From soda fountain to milkshake factory.

Neighborhood Spotlight: The South Side

What started as a family chocolate shop in the South Side more than 30 years ago has transformed into a milkshake factory. Well, into The MilkShake Factory, where your ice cream is made fresh to order in-house. It’s become one of Pittsburgh’s fastest-growing local businesses, so we decided to pop into the original location for a treat (or two).

Fun fact: The chocolate has been made at “grandad’s factory” since 1914. And it’s even attracted some celebs โ€”ย watch the video to see what Alec Baldwin orders.

Quotable: “We’re a chocolate family, so we’re very particular about what we produce.”ย  – Albert Fonticiella

Hmmmโ€ฆ Makes us think we probably can’t go wrong with The Chocolatier. Just sayin’. ๐Ÿ˜‹
