Carnegie Mellon University made a Pittsburgh map for prospective students. It highlighted neighborhoods like Lawrenceville, the South Side, and Highland Park. But it left out historically black neighborhoods like the Hill District, Homewood, and Larimer. The university apologized, and a local business-owner made a map in response with the title Hood Lives Matter. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
How do you define Pittsburgh’s regions outside of the city limits? We can all probably agree on regions like the North Hills, South Hills, and Allegheny Valley. But what about Ohio Valley, Quaker Valley, and Suburban Mon? Here’s one mapmaker’s take — and the battle in the comments. (Ben Forstate on Twitter)
When you flush the toilet, where does it go? There’s a new interactive map that’ll show you. Just type in your address here, and the tool will calculate exactly where your waste goes on its journey to the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority. For example, a flush at the Monroeville Mall will take up to a day to travel the 24.31 miles to ALCOSAN going through 17 municipalities and neighborhoods. (90.5 WESA)
A “Way” by any other name is … an Alley. In 1914, Pittsburgh changed the name of every “Alley” in Pittsburgh to “Way.” It was aimed at making the thoroughfares more appealing “because alleys were associated with crime.” (City of Pittsburgh on Twitter)
How many Scrabble points is P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R-G-H worth? This map uses Scrabble tiles to illustrate Pittsburgh neighborhoods and beyond. See if you can find your neighborhood. (Pittsburgh Trail on Twitter)
Usually, we stick to outside locations for I Spy Pittsburgh.
But this week, we’re going inside. And that’s the only clue we’re sharing. 😇
Recognize this place? Is it an art installation? Some ultra-modern building lobby? Or something else all together?
OK, one more clue because this one is tough … and that clue is the word “eponymous.”
