🤔 Q: How does bankruptcy even work for a business?

A: Kirk Burkley, Managing Partner at Bernstein-Burkley, P.C., specializing in bankruptcy and restructuring, shares:

Bankruptcy is a tool used by businesses and individuals with more debt than they can realistically pay off and is typically used in one of two ways:

1. To sell off or liquidate assets to pay off debt, a.k.a. Chapter 7

2. To strike a court-assisted deal with creditors allowing more time to pay off debt, a.k.a. Chapter 11

Deciding which of these options is right depends on how you see your ability to make money going forward.

“It’s definitely harder to do this now because you just don’t know what’s coming,” Burkley said.

One more thing …

We leave you today with the words of Ryan Shazier.

The Steelers linebacker officially announced his retirement from pro football yesterday, nearly three years after an on-the-field spinal injury that left him temporarily unable to walk.

Shazier thanked Pittsburgh for its support, adding: “When I got hurt, football may have been taken away from me, but everything it gave me is still here inside. I am incredibly grateful for that and truly excited now to discover what is next.”

Thanks for checking in with us. We’ll see you back here tomorrow.
