Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is the city's top Democrat. But he isn't backing the party's nominee in a special election for a vacant City Council seat. Instead, Peduto is backing an independent candidate for District 8. Peduto said this shouldn't surprise anyone since he's backed unendorsed candidates before. But it also hints at what some have described as the balkanization of the party here, a shift that has left its local bastion increasingly — or at least continually — out of step with the party’s most powerful local politician.
Six Tuskegee Airmen — who fought in WWII and fought racism — hailed from Beltzhoover, and a community group there now wants to honor the veterans with a public art project. January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The purpose of International Holocaust Remembrance Day is two-fold: To serve as a date for official commemoration of the victims of the Nazi regime and to promote Holocaust education throughout the world. In Pittsburgh, the day will be commemorated with a screening and discussion of the film Sterne.
