Advocates for Pittsburgh's Hispanic community fear an ICE crackdown is underway after four Mexican immigrants were recently arrested. Casa San Jose's Sister Janice Vanderneck told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that two men are currently being detained in the Cambria County Jail while the other two men were released on bail. All four have been "charged with being present in the United States without authorization."
The family of a man who died after being treated at UPMC Shadyside is suing the hospital chain and its linen vendor, alleging that his death was connected to mold growth. UPMC officials said 65-year-old John R. Haines was "extremely sick" and that the type of fungal infection he contracted could have come from outside the hospital or may have been carried in. "Haines is the sixth person believed to have died after contracting a fungal infection inside a UPMC facility," TribLive reported, and the suit is the fifth filed in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas connected to the deaths.
A new restaurant on the North Side is one of only three in Pittsburgh that doesn't accept tips. “Once you get to looking deeply at tipping, you see all these negative effects of it,” Casellula @ Alphabet City owner Brian Keyser said. While Keyser's new Pittsburgh spot has a no-tipping policy, his restaurant in New York doesn't. Why? Because a restaurant needs "complete staff buy-in" for it to work, he said.
