Pittsburgh Public Schools officials said Thursday that even after federal guidelines on transgender students were withdrawn, the district stands by its policies affirming "basic human rights." Teen singer and Pine-native Jackie Evancho, who was criticized for performing at Donald Trump's inauguration, tweeted at the president, asking him to meet with her and her sister, Juliet, to talk transgender rights. Pittsburgh's Somali Bantu community is on high alert after one of its own was beaten Tuesday in Beltzhoover. While police say it appears the crime was a robbery, Somalis like Omar are afraid. “When around the country Muslims have been assaulted almost every day, how can we not think that is not a hatred crime,” he said at a press conference Thursday, according to TribLive. Shortly before Donald Trump signed a travel ban that included Somalia, a former refugee from that country living in Pittsburgh told The Incline that "The fear is coming more and more with the people.”
