Over the past year, buying booze in Pennsylvania has gotten exponentially easier. Amendments to the the Commonwealth’s labyrinthine liquor code have allowed for beer sales at gas stations, six-pack sales at beer distributors, shipments of wine direct to consumer addresses and — in the most drastic shakeup of the state monopoly so far — wine sales at grocery stores. Will spirits be next?
At 7:30 a.m., the 42 Pennsylvanian will leave Pittsburgh’s Amtrak station on time, scheduled to arrive in Harrisburg just before 1 p.m. It’s a trip that happens daily between the Western Pa. city and the state capital, one that’s reversed only once a day with a departure time of 2:36 p.m. So what would it take to get more passenger trains between Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth's capital? State Sen. Randy Vulakovich, a Republican who represents part of Pittsburgh, plans to introduce a resolution that would direct the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to study the cost of infrastructure improvements needed to make two additional daily trips in each direction possible.
Former Penn State President Graham Spanier will appear in court today in Harrisburg on three felony charges — conspiracy and two counts of endangering the welfare of children — related to the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal. Former Athletic Director Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, an ex-university VP, both pleaded guilty to child-endangerment charges last week, The Inquirer reports, which "reopened the door to a long-unresolved and oft-debated question: When did university leaders know about the former assistant coach's predatory behavior and what did they do — or fail to do — about it?"
