What Pittsburgh is talking about

Pool season is in full swing, but two major attractions at Sandcastle still haven’t opened for the season.

The Lazy River and the Cliffhangers slide are closed thanks to flooding earlier this year, TribLive reported. Floodwaters poured in and then froze, cracking the Lazy River’s fiberglass. The slide shares the same water filtration system as the Lazy River.

“Major repairs” are needed, a Sandcastle official said, and a rainy May slowed the process. There’s no timeframe on when the attractions will open.

But Sancastle is just one of the many places to beat the heat and humidity.

Pittsburgh is home to more than a dozen swimming pools, plus many more outside of the city limits (including the largest public pool in Pennsylvania). There are also a bunch of spray parks to check out nearby and lakes worth a drive. Here’s our complete guide to the best places to splash around this summer.

In other news…

A Pittsburgh firefighter is on administrative leave after video emerged of him pinning down a 13-year-old black child during a dispute in a Greenfield park. Thomas D’Andrea, a city firefighter and member of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee, was charged with simple assault and criminal mischief in connection with the racially charged incident. But removing D’Andrea as a member of the county’s Democratic committee might prove difficult, officials say. (90.5 WESA)

Have your say in the expansion of Pittsburgh’s busways with a new transit-mapping tool from Pittsburghers for Public Transit. The tool, called “Beyond the East Busway,” allows residents and riders to provide input on where the buses should go and which communities need those connections the most. All this as the push for busway expansion gains momentum with local elected officials. (Pittsburgh City Paper)

A 3,700-mile coast-to-coast bike path will cross through the Pittsburgh region. The Great American Rail-Trail will span more than 3,700 miles from Washington D.C. to Washington state and take a couple of years to complete. (Philly Voice)

Did you know...

Thousands of wolves, bears, foxes, tigers, and even unicorns (well, people dressed like them, at least) have taken over Pittsburgh’s streets.

As part of the annual Anthrocon, furries and fursuiters are meeting at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center through July 7. It’s the world’s largest convention dedicated to anthropomorphics.

You might want to take a picture with these folks. Or you might want to join in the fun. Or you might just have questions about the whole thing.

So we’ve got a guide to all things Anthrocon whether or not you wear fur, including etiquette, parade details, and all your other furry questions.

One more thing...

Calling all retro gamers: There’s a new pop up bar in Market Square with retro video game-themed food and drinks. Level Up is located at 268 Forbes Ave, the former site of the “Game of Thrones” pop-up bar. Check it out this weekend with one player or two.

See you Monday.
