What Pittsburgh is talking about

In case you were living under a rock (or in a sinkhole), a Port Authority bus got stuck in a sinkhole yesterday. And while it broke the street, it also broke the Internet.

Before we go any further, some background: The 33,000-pound bus got stuck in a sinkhole around 8 a.m. yesterday on 10th Street at Penn Avenue, near the Convention Center. The bus was at a red-light when the road gave way to a hole measuring 20 feet deep and 75 to 100 feet across, 90.5 WESA reports. One passenger was treated for minor injuries, per Port Authority.

Traffic was mangled all day, and the bus couldn’t be removed until late Monday night thanks to help from a giant crane.

The site quickly became a tourist destination. And if you haven’t seen the pictures, you’ve got to.

Seeing as nobody was badly hurt, the internet decided to do what it does best: Make memes.

They range from the Pittsburgh-themed to the thrill-seeking to the data-nerdy to the political. And then there’s this dreamy skyline. And this incline tribute that made us lol. And how about a very meta public transit meme about a different kind of public transit. Good job, internet.

Stay away from the area for “the foreseeable future,” the city advises. Here’s hoping for a much more chill commute today.

In other news …

That’s two outs for the Pirates. The team fired executive vice president and general manager Neal Huntington yesterday, just a week after President Frank Coonelly left. After another rough season, the team’s owner, Bob Nutting, said, “significant change was necessary in order to refresh our entire operations.” (ESPN)

UPMC is expanding its reach — really far. The Pittsburgh medical center is building a hospital in Chengdu, China, the first of five Chinese hospitals UPMC will co-run with Beijing-based Wanda Group. It’s a 20-year, $2 billion deal that will make UPMC “the largest presence of American-style medicine outside the United States.” (TribLive)

Racism is wearing down Pittsburgh’s reporters of color, a new study explains. “The Pittsburgh Problem: Race, Media and Everyday Life in the Steel City” examines racial disparities in Pittsburgh’s media ecosystem from the perspective of journalists of color. Among the report’s findings: journalists experienced backlash when they voiced concerns about coverage and lack of diversity; journalists of color reported less sustained mentorship and fewer advancement opportunities than their white colleagues; several journalists said they found they city itself unwelcoming to people of color. By now, you’re probably familiar with our Pittsburgh-themed illustrations. Like that time we made Pittsburgh’s hierarchy of needs, or when we shared ways to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Tarot with a Pittsburgh flair.

Did you know …

… that there’s a Pittsburgh tarot deck? For real. A local artist created a deck all about the Steel City. Whether you’re into tarot or just into Pittsburgh, it’s worth checking out.

It looks very different than the swords, emperors, and chariots you’d see in a classic tarot deck. Insted, this version features cicadas, a Lawrenceville yoga zombie, bridges, a tunnel monster, and even Bill Peduto.

Here’s some light reading about Pittsburgh tarot card readings.
